And Be Sure Not To Make These Mistakes
Work through these tips and exercises to help improve you pain. But please note, this does not constitue personal medical advice and does not take into account your unique personal circumstances. Take and use this advice at your own risk. If you choose to have a consult with one of our podiatrists, we can tailor a personal treatment plan for you.
Footwear
Choosing the right footwear is vital to help get over your heel pain. Wearing shoes that hold on to your feet offer a lot more support and allows the muscles of the arch to rest. Wearing slip on and thongs do the opposite, overworking the muscles and contributing to the pain.
Arch Massage
Arch massage will help to relax the muslces through the arch, allowing them to function better. Find the tender spots under your arch using a small ball, and use enough pressure so that it feels like a good pain to massage the area. Remember, if the pain is increasing during the exercise or just doesn’t feel right, stop the exercise.
Arch Stretch
The arch stretch is a great exercise to do on the side of the bed in the morning before getting up. Simply bring you foot to your lap, and pull your toes toward your shin. This will stretch out the arch and even the calf muscle.
Calf Stretch
Calf stretching will help to take the load off the arch. The calf stretch shown here requires you to lunge toward the wall, holding this position while you feel a stretch in you lower leg. Stop if you feel any pain during the exercise.
Rest – Orthotics
Orthotics are a way of resting your arch while you are still doing activity. They support the arch and help prevent the flattening that is contributing to the pain. There are many types of orthotics, including those available at shoe shops and chemists, right through to orthotics that we custom make from an image of your foot, allowing us to build an individual orthotic for your problems.
