Ingrown toenails come in all shapes and sizes, but the one thing that they all have in common is that they are painful.

If your toe is looking red, inflamed, oozing pus in one or both corners of your nail, then you have the classic ingrown toenail. It may have been there for a single day or some months. With longer standing ingrown toenails, proud flesh can start to grow over the nail plate.

But not all ingrown toenails will appear like this. Some nails are pressing into the fleshy pulp of the toe, but not actually breaking the skin and causing the reaction above. Although some may think that they don’t look as impressive, they can make your toe very sore.
