🎥 Watch First: Build Stronger Calves, Move Better
Before we get into the details, check out this short video I recorded — inspired by meeting Olympic gold medallist Stephen Bradbury at a recent Redlands Chamber of Commerce breakfast.
In it, I share how his story of perseverance relates to our own health, and how something as simple as calf strength can make a huge difference in staying active and pain-free.
Why Calf Strength Matters
Your calf muscles are the powerhouse for every step you take. They help push you forward, absorb impact, and keep your body balanced. When they’re strong, they support your feet and ankles. When they’re weak or tight, you’re more likely to experience:
-
Heel pain or plantar fasciitis
-
Achilles tendon issues
-
Tired, achy feet after long days on your feet
They also act as a natural pump for circulation, moving blood and fluid back toward your heart and helping reduce swelling in your lower legs.
Strong calves = strong, steady, pain-free steps.
Two Simple Exercises to Try
You don’t need a gym or fancy equipment — just a few minutes each day.
1️⃣ Heel Raises
Stand tall, lift your heels slowly, hold for a second, and lower down with control.
👉 Try 2 sets of 10–15 reps.
2️⃣ Single-Leg Heel Raises
Once you’re comfortable, progress to one leg at a time.
👉 Focus on steady balance and controlled movement.
It’s normal to feel some tightness or mild discomfort when you start — that’s just your muscles working.
If you feel sharp or lasting pain, stop and check in with your podiatrist before continuing.
